A new video about Barb Tarbox – a
courageous 41-year-old mother who lost her battle with lung cancer
caused by cigarette smoking – is now
available in B.C. This video is an excellent companion tool for bc.tobaccofacts.
It is strongly recommended that teachers/facilitators preview the material,
as the emotional content is very strong.
Following are some examples
of ways the Barb Tarbox video supports/supplements the bc.tobaccofacts
learning resources.
GRADE 7
Lesson 1
- Students will review why people smoke.
- Students will be able to list the
health and social consequences of tobacco use.
Lesson 2
- Students will communicate the real story about smoking.
GRADE 8
Lesson 1
- Students will explore the social factors that influence their
attitudes towards tobacco use.
Lesson 3
- Students will apply decision-making and refusal skills to make
healthy choices around tobacco.
GRADE 9
Lesson 1
- Students will develop the ability to make decisions and apply
problem-solving strategies to prevent tobacco use.
- Students will communicate
their own attitudes and knowledge about tobacco use and second-hand
smoke.
Lesson 2
- Students will develop ways they can influence their peers and
their community to be tobacco-free.
GRADE 10
Lesson 1
- Students will explain the emotional and physical costs of being
addicted to tobacco.
