Science, Tobacco and You

This resource, developed by Health Canada, is a tobacco prevention teaching resource for Grades 4 to 6, which includes a CD-ROM, teacher’s guide, flash cards and exercise sheets.

The program contains an easy-to-use, interactive CD-ROM, and a teacher’s resource guide with non-sequenced sample lesson plans, short, fun assignments, and a series of student Quest cards.

It can be used in curricula areas such as health, science, language arts, math, drama and visual arts. Students will learn how tobacco affects the nervous system, respiratory system and the circulatory system.

It fits perfectly with bc.tobaccofacts Grade 5 resource, Lesson 2, “A Fantastic Voyage”, complements Lesson 3, “The Nicotine Addictions Cycle” and has information that could be used in Lesson 5, “The Talk Show”.

Teachers can use the CD-ROM with the whole class before Lesson 2 as a biology backgrounder on the respiratory and circulatory system. There are lots of activities on the CD-Rom that can be used in Extensions as well as a computer centre activity used throughout the bc.tobaccofacts unit. And, if teachers are already using bc.tobaccofacts, they need only use the CD-ROM and Quest Cards from Science, Tobacco and You.

If your school does not already have a copy, order one at
