The resource, Heart Smart Kids K3 / bc.tobaccofacts K-3 forms the foundation of the bc.tobaccofacts program. It consists of three main parts:

  • An Educator’s Guide providing classroom activities and resources around four main themes:
    - basic heart facts for students
    - heart-healthy nutrition
    - active play and living an active life
    - living smoke free
  • The Heart Smart Kids K3 / bc.tobaccofacts K-3 Funbook includes a children’s story, puzzle, and a variety of poems, riddles and fun activities students can do in class or at home.
  • A big book storybook containing “The HeartSmart Puzzle".

Intermediate

Grades 4, 5, 6 and 7 bc.tobaccofacts are individual binders containing a series of lessons culminating in a special event that celebrates the students’ learning. Lessons in the units are designed to help students make healthy choices about using tobacco. The learning outcomes are integrated with existing B.C. curricula.

When delivering any of the lessons, teachers are also teaching the prescribed learning outcomes of the Personal Planning K-7 Integrated Resource Package. As well, the lessons link closely to other curriculum areas such as English Language Arts, Fine Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science. Each module contains lesson plans, teaching strategies, teaching info sheets, contacts, resources, transparencies and posters.

Each lesson is student-focused and organized as follows:

  • Lesson (number and name)
  • General Overview
  • Curriculum Connections
  • Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Preparation
  • Engaging the Learner
  • Activities
  • Assessment
  • Extensions
  • Home/Community Involvement
  • Vocabulary

Overhead transparencies, tobacco fact sheets, black line masters, and posters are included.
